Furious 7 director
James Wan has been selected to assist production for the next
Mortal Kombat film.
Wan is also known for his work in the horror genre with
The Conjuring and
Insidious franchises.
For the past several years,
Mortal Kombat has been aiming to make a comeback to the big screen.
New Line Cinema and
Broken Road Productions are currently in the process of rebooting the franchise, using a script by
Oren Uziel, who also wrote the
Mortal Kombat Legacy web series, and Dave Callaham (
Doom).
The studios have described the new movie as a "departure from the original mythology" with "darker, brutally real martial arts." The story will focus on "a seemingly harmless guy who realizes his potential when he finds himself caught in the middle of a cross-dimensional battle between the warriors of Earth and the monsters of Outworld. Now, in order to stop the world from total destruction, he must win the martial arts tournament known as 'Mortal Kombat'."
