Mortal Kombat was released by Midway in 1992. It was popular because of its realistic, digitized graphics mixed with bloody and brutal action. This differentiated it from the hand-drawn, more anime-like graphics of competing games like Street Fighter II. Mortal Kombat made the word "Fatality" famous by its inclusion of finishing moves that would dispatch of the loser in gory fashion. It was because of this graphic violence that led to the founding of the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). Although highly controversial, the mix of realism and violence propelled Mortal Kombat to widespread renown, spawning numerous sequels in both the fighting and action/adventure genres.

GORO LIVES!! A 2,000 year old half human dragon Goro remains undefeated for the past 500 years. He won the title of Grand Champion by defeating Kung Lao, a Shaolin fighting monk. It was during this time period where the tournament fell into Shang Tsung's hands. Now you have been chosen to represent Earthrealm in an ancient tournament called Mortal Kombat.
