The Shokan is a race of beings of half-human, half-dragon descent that reside in a sub-realm of Outworld called Kuatan. The most striking characteristic of the Shokan is their four arms. Shokan also seem to be able to take on the characteristics of other animals, as well. A good example of this is the tiger-like appearance of Kintaro. Their large stature and hostile nature make them perfect warriors for Shao Kahn's armies.

Throughout history, the Shokan have always been mortal enemies of the Centaurs. Although, during the events of Mortal Kombat Gold, an uneasy peace treaty was finally formed between the two races. However, after many Shokan believed Goro to be killed in battle during the events of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, moral among them seemed to decrease. It was revealed in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon that rogue members of the Shokan had placed a curse on the Centaurs, thus turning them into Minotaurs. Once this was learned, tensions between the two races exploded, once again.
