The word Kamidogu literally means "Tool of God", from the Japanese words "Kami" and "Dogu."

The Kamidogu were introduced in Mortal Kombat: Deception and were the primary goal of the story. Shujinko had to find these sacred artifacts in the Konquest mode of Mortal Kombat: Deception to open portals to other realms, placing them on the altar of the Elder Gods in the Nexus. They are also the weapons the Elder Gods used millenia ago to shatter the consciousness of the One Being and create all of reality. It is said that, if the six pieces of the Kamidogu are brought together and merged with the power of Shinnok's amulet, all of reality will be undone.

After the events of the past were altered by Raiden to prevent Armageddon, the Kamidogu once more play a pivotal role in the new timeline, though with significant changes.

Reintroduced in the Mortal Kombat X comic book series as daggers, the Kamidogu are now used to invoke powerful Blood Magik. Offering the daggers blood, either the wielder's own or someone else's, can increase the powers of the wielder. However, there is a high cost for using the Kamidogu in such a way: the draining of the user's strength by a large margin, leaving them severely weakened.
