Mortal Kombat 1
Quan Chi made his first appearance as a boss in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero. A powerful sorcerer and necromancer, he has become a primary villain in the Mortal Kombat storyline. His most notable act of brutality was destroying Scorpion's entire family and clan, the Shirai Ryu.
Much of Quan Chi's past is unknown. However, it is known that he was once an Oni from the Netherrealm. Eventually, he would meet Shinnok who was being tortured in the Netherrealm by Lucifer. In exchange for power and a place at Shinnok's side, Quan Chi assisted the fallen Elder God in overthrowing Lucifer and becoming ruler of the Netherrealm. However, in order for Shinnok to gain supreme power, he would need his amulet, now hidden in the Temple of Elements in the Himalayan mountains of Nepal.
Eventually, Quan Chi would discover the amulet's location. He approached the Lin Kuei and offered to destroy their rival clan, the Shirai Ryu, in exchange for Sub-Zero retrieving the amulet from the Temple of Elements. Unaware of Quan Chi's true motives, Sub-Zero embarked on this journey and was successful in retrieving the amulet. However, Quan Chi, who was now leading the Brotherhood of the Shadow, did not give the amulet to Shinnok. Instead, he created a duplicate amulet to present to his master.
During the events of Mortal Kombat 4/Gold, Shinnok, believing he was now all-powerful, would lead an assault on Edenia. However, he would eventually be defeated by the Edenian forces with the aid of the Earthrealm warriors. Scorpion would eventually learn that it was Quan Chi who killed his family and clan. When confronted by Scorpion, Quan Chi made an attempt to send the ninja to the Netherrealm. However, before disappearing, Scorpion was able to grab Quan Chi, and they were both sent back to the Netherrealm.
In the Netherrealm, Quan Chi was constantly tormented by Scorpion. However, Quan Chi would eventually discover a portal back to Outworld. In exchange for protection from Scorpion, Quan Chi offered the Oni Drahmin and Moloch a chance to escape the Netherrealm. During a confrontation with Scorpion, Quan Chi secretly fled without them. Once through the portal, Quan Chi emerged in the Lost Tomb which housed the mummified Army of the Dragon King. In order to revive the army, he would need the expertise of Shang Tsung to transport souls into their lifeless bodies.
Now known as the Deadly Alliance, Quan Chi and Shang Tsung began their plan to conquer the realms. By opening a Soulnado, Shang Tsung began reviving the Dragon King's army. However, before their plan could be complete, they needed to eliminate two individuals who could stand in their way - Shao Kahn and Liu Kang. Still weakened from his failed invasion of Earthrealm during the events of Mortal Kombat 3, Shao Kahn was ambushed and supposedly killed by the Deadly Alliance. Next, Shang Tsung morphed into Kung Lao and gained entry to the Lung Hai temple. Secretly sneaking Quan Chi inside, the two sorcerers attacked Liu Kang, and although he fought well, he was not strong enough to defeat them both at the same time and was killed.
Returning to Outworld, the Deadly Alliance commanded Kano and his troops to have the inhabitants of a small Outworld village to construct a new palace to house the soulnado. However, unknown to Quan Chi, Drahmin and Moloch had also escaped the Netherrealm through the same portal and made a deal with Shang Tsung. Once their plan was complete, Shang Tsung would release the two Oni to have their revenge on Quan Chi.
After the Deadly Alliance had defeated Raiden and remaining Earthrealm warriors, Quan Chi began to grow suspicious of Shang Tsung. Believing Shang Tsung wanted Quan Chi's amulet, the two eventually fought, with Quan Chi emerging victorious. However, his victory was short-lived. Onaga, the Dragon King, entered the palace and revealed that he had returned. The two sorcerers and Raiden put their differences aside and formed a new alliance in an attempt to defeat Onaga. Even with their combined power, they were still no match for him. In a last chance effort, Raiden released his Godlike essence. The blast destroyed Raiden, the sorcerers, and the palace, but it had little effect on Onaga.
In Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, it was revealed that Quan Chi teleported out of Shang Tsung's Palace just before Raiden's ethereal blast. He now seeks to gain ultimate god-like power by defeating Blaze.
After the events of Mortal Kombat(2011), Quan Chi uses his necromancer powers to build an army of revenants from the fallen Earthrealm warriors, twisting their minds to fight on his behalf.

Mortal Kombat 4

A free roaming sorcerer, powerful in the black arts, Quan Chi uses his abilities to free the now evil Elder God Shinnok from his confines in the Netherealm. In exchange for his services, Shinnok has granted Quan Chi the position of arch-sorcerer of his now expanded Netherealm.
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance

Stranded in the Netherealm, Quan Chi was persistently tormented by the ninja spectre Scorpion. But with assistance from Moloch and Drahmin, Quan Chi discovered the truth about the amulet he had stolen from the fallen Elder God Shinnok. An ancient runestone bearing the likeness of his amulet revealed new information that would enable Quan Chi to traverse the realms through a network of ancient gateways. Narrowly evading Scorpion's wrath, he escaped the Netherealm through one of these gateways and emerged in an ancient tomb in Outword.
Quan Chi had stumbled upon the ancient mummified army of the long-forgotten Dragon King. Writings on the King's sarcophagus had revealed that the army was invincible and that it could be revived. Quan Chi struck a deal with the sorcerer Shang Tsung to resuscitate the army in return for the constant supply of souls his amulet could unlock from a gateway to the Heavens. Before any alliance between the two could succeed, however, their two strongest opponents would have to be eliminated.

Mortal Kombat (2011)

The Netherrealm has produced many vile beings, but none rival the Arch-Sorcerer Quan Chi. In lieu of Netherrealm demons, he prefers to resurrect deceased warriors for use in his sinister plans. Foremost among them is the tortured Shirai Ryu ninja Scorpion, who is Quan Chi's personal assassin. Quan Chi is building an army of such specters--the purpose of which has yet to be revealed. Another mystery is the sorcerer's involvement in the Mortal Kombat tournament. The Netherrealm has no stake in its outcome, which leads some observers to question his presence....
Mortal Kombat X

Originally a Netherrealm demon, Quan Chi evolved into one of the most powerful sorcerers in the realms. He serves the High Lord Shinnok, who was imprisoned in the Netherrealm by his fellow Elder Gods. Twenty-five years ago, Quan Chi helped Shinnok escape his hellish prison. Together they waged war on an Earthrealm weakened by its conflict with Outworld. When Shinnok was defeated, Quan Chi was driven underground. He continues to manipulate events from parts unknown.
Mortal Kombat 1

Quan Chi was born into hard labor in an Outworld mine. He had no future. Just the guarantee of certain death in its dark tunnels.
To carry favor with the mine's owner, Quan Chi informed on fellow workers who were planning a strike. It was broken and many strikers killed. The survivors were not going to forgive and forget. They plotted to kill Quan Chi. Quan Chi's life is saved by a mysterious benefactor. In exchange for his service, she offered to free him from the mines and train him in dark magic. Quan Chi eagerly accepted.
Now a master of the Netherrealm's most vile sorcery, Quan Chi plots with Shang Tsung to conquer the realms. He will not be denied.
Mortal Kombat 4

Shinnok: As payment for your loyal services Quan Chi, I grant you the gift of your existence.
Quan Chi: My existence?
Shinnok: Understand sorcerer, I consume all energies, including the life force of all that lived, but I shall spare you.
Quan Chi: If it weren't for me, you would still be a tortured soul rotting in the pits of the Netherealm.
Shinnok: You dare question me!
Quan Chi: I do more than question you, I challenge you!
Shinnok: Then you shall die!
Shinnok: What!?
Quan Chi: Your powers are useless against me.
Shinnok: How can this be?
Quan Chi: I am in possession of your once sacred amulet. Years ago, I delivered to you an exact duplicate, while I retained the original. I even fooled Raiden. Now I am ruler supreme, and you elder god, are finished!
Shinnok: No!!!
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance

The Deadly Alliance was successful in reviving the mummified remains of the Dragon King's undefeatable army. It would appear that nothing could stand in the way of Shang Tsung and Quan Chi as they began their domination of the realms. Unfortunately for Shang Tsung, however, Quan Chi had no further need for the partnership. Once Shang Tsung had finally revived the last of the mummified warriors, Quan Chi closed the portal to The Heavens and effectively shut off Shang Tsung's endless supply of souls. Quan Chi then instructed Kano to assassinate Shang Tsung in a surprise weapon attack. With their captor cut wide open, the thousands of souls Shang Tsung had consumed in the past spewed forth and swirled around the room.
Quan Chi came to the realization that if Kano could so easily turn on Shang Tsung, he could also turn on Quan Chi himself. Quan Chi used his sorcery to drain the life from Kano and left his body where it fell. Immediately one of the lingering souls shot into Kano's body. To Quan Chi's surprise, the man standing before him was no longer the Black Dragon thug known as Kano. Kano's body now contained the soul of the Shaolin monk... Liu Kang.
Mortal Kombat: Armageddon

The defeat of Blaze enhanced Quan Chi's already powerful sorcery beyond his imaginings. The surge of energy was so great that it shattered his medallion. In his arrogance, Quan Chi ascended from Edenia to assault the Heavens. There he confronted me, with the Elder Gods at my side. The quest had been an elaborate trap designed to pinpoint the true source of disruption in the realms. As punishment, Quan Chi was transformed into a Kamidogu - the very medallion he had carried with him for so many years. The Elder Gods cast the magical item back in time, at the exact point where Shinnok had first discovered it.
Mortal Kombat (2011)

Having finally brought about Shao Kahn's demise, Quan Chi was then tasked with growing the ranks of the Brotherhood of Shadow. Many warriors had perished in Outworld's invasion of Earthrealm. Quan Chi stole their souls and remade them to serve his master, the fallen Elder God. The task completed, Shinnok repaid Quan Chi's service by ordering his execution, thereby eliminating a possible challenger to his rule. Quan Chi had anticipated this act of treachery, however, and resurrected Shao Kahn - the ultimate phantom warrior. With Shao Kahn as his enforcer, Quan Chi struck down the Brotherhood of Shadow and Shinnok. Quan Chi forgives betrayal from no one. Not even a god.
Mortal Kombat X

Quan Chi had long been a servant of Shinnok; his role in freeing him from imprisonment had not gone unnoticed by the Elder Gods. Shinnok was no longer a threat, but Quan Chi's actions had given rise to a new power. After much deliberation, the Elder Gods contrived a plan to re-balance this power before it grew further. Free will was burned from Quan Chi's soul and replaced with a single directive...He must kill Raiden.
