After coming across the Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks 2 image posted on the personal website of former Midway LA employee Matthew Doyle, I decided to contact Matt to see if he had anymore information about the game. According to Matt, the game was codenamed 'Fire and Ice' due to Scorpion and Sub-Zero being the planned main characters.
Matthew Doyle: It was canceled within a few weeks of my arriving at Midway. I don't have anything else to show you unfortunately. Half the studio was laid off, and new management was brought in. Then we started work on TNA Wrestling.
A prototype level was built, but that was it. A few design docs were worked on, and a few characters were made in 3D - Scorpion and Subzero. The game was codenamed Fire & Ice - as those two characters were to be the main characters. I was really looking forward to doing level design and construction for it. It was a shame it was canceled.
Not sure how Scorpion and Sub-Zero working as a team would work canon-wise. It sounds like it would've really screwed up continuity, assuming the game's storyline took place right after the first Shaolin Monks game. Oh well, maybe it's cancellation was for the best.

Was it Classic Sub-Zero or the current one? For current one, it could take place after Armageddon with Scorpion and Sub-Zero II coming to a truce and to save Scorpion's son and having another ultimate objective: put an end to Quan Chi's plans forever by killing him (for good). Or it could have been them forming a truce to fight an ancient or new enemy they both have reasons to hate, a teamup like Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow. For Classic Sub-Zero, I could only see them working together for one or two levels (so maybe it was like Ultimate Spider-Man, where you could control Spider-Man and Venom through seperate story lines). I'd have mixed feelings about it.

I would think it'd follow a seperate storyline kinda how MKSM did it for the MK2 plotline (Like how they killed off Jade, Kintaro, etc.), just post-MK2, where Scorpion (as per his original MK2 ending) vows to protect the young Sub-Zero instead of killing him, and would create another alternate timeline from post-MK2 into MK3, where Scorp and Sub would be a team force. It would've been a great way to explain certain inconsistincies in the plot (like the multiple reasons how Johnny Cage died), or show other characters under their mask, I thought it was a great concept how they unmasked Kabal as a bonus cameo or at the end of the game you actually get to see Kahn's real face before he's defeated.

Well fuck. now I just lost MORE faith that MK9 is going to be good.
Hey, maybe it would have had Kung Lao and Liu Kang as bonus characters, speaking the exact same lines!

Shaolin Monks with Sub Zero and Scorpion.
I'm leaning more toward MK3 era. You know how the first one was after MK1 to MK2. Well I can imagine it what's happening to the MK3 era. Scorpion did promised to help Sub Zero. Sheeva...Motaro...Shao Kahn. A lot more people too.
Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself again. Since it probably won't happen now.
